This film is a brilliant example of a captivating trailer that draws viewers into a film they might not have considered. Sydney Sweeney’s performance and the drama captivated me, leading me to buy tickets. The trailer was heavily promoted before most films I watched in October and November.
Sometimes films outside your usual interests can be the most captivating. The story being a biography of female boxer Christy Martin, detailing her rise to fame and the struggles she faced with success, relationships, family, business and ultimately the decline and near-fatal consequences of her relationship with husband and trainer Jim Martin, played by Ben Foster.
Sydney Sweeney starred in the film and underwent a significant lifestyle transformation to build muscle and gain weight for the role, adding 35lb. An interesting ABC article documents her preparation, weight gains and training (here). This is a very different role from her previous films and her portrayal of Christy will undoubtedly earn some award nominations and recognition.
Ben Foster’s portrayal of Jim was equally captivating and disturbing, especially as the film progressed. He effectively played both the trainer and husband. Merritt Wever, who played Christy’s mother, provided support and was a familiar face to me (Nurse Jackie TV show).
The film beautifully captures the late 80s and 90s before moving into recent years. It’s an enjoyable watch though perhaps a bit long. The pacing improves after a slower start.
My 15-year-old daughter and my wife both enjoyed this film as well. While it naturally highlights the career success of Christy and the challenges that come with it, it becomes quite disturbing towards the end with the domestic abuse she faces. A gritty watch as the film progresses.
If you’re a sports fan and familiar with Christy, this is a must-watch. For those like me who aren’t familiar with her and enjoy biographical dramas, it’s also highly recommended.
