This was a slightly unusual choice for me and not something I’d normally pay to see in cinemas. However, the trailer grabbed my interest, especially Russell Crowe’s captivating performance in this Sky Original film.

This high-budget presentation documents the historic Nuremberg trials, based on real life events after World War II. It explores the developing relationship between psychiatrist Dr Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek) and Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe) as Kelley assesses whether Göring and other key Nazis are fit for trial.

The high budget enables realistic period detail in costumes and sets. Russell Crowe delivers a flawless performance and strong screen presence as the highly intelligent, ruthless and manipulative Göring. His captivating portrayal is essential to the film and he shares much screen time with Rami Malek whose media reviews have been mixed. Personally, I found his portrayal believable and his interactions with Crowe are undoubtedly the film’s main focus.

The film drew a larger audience than I’ve recently seen at my local cinema for a mid-week performance. I believe it’s selling well and will undoubtedly attract award nominations next year. Sky will likely be pleased with its performance too.

While it may not appeal to everyone, those interested in war, history and World War II will undoubtedly find this film captivating. I personally found it much more engaging than I expected.
