For a gamer of a particular age that remembers the ZX81, Spectrum and C64, I was pleased to come across a streaming gaming site that just caters for retro classics. Strangely name “Antstream”.

This streaming gaming site has big plans and it is currently available to play on the XBOX and PC, Mac and some Smart TV’s. Streaming via Playstation is listed as coming soon after a period of XBOX exclusivity.

What caught my eye about the platform was that these games are all officially licensed from the rights holders and are the actual classic versions. Having owned a C64, I was quickly able to find classics to play like Paradroid, Burger Time, Jet Set Willy, Manic Miner and more.

Installation was just a small file that I downloaded onto my Mac and I was up and running really quickly. You can then choose a free sub, monthly or annual payment. I opted for the monthly so that I could actually play games. On the free, anything I selected did not appear playable so not entirely sure what that sub offers. I should also note that if you sign up via XBOX, you get a yearly or a lifetime sub to choose from. The monthly sub was £3.99 as I wanted to try out the system. It maybe that I upgrade to a higher plan in future. If I continue to get on well with the platform, I may also load it directly on my XBOX.

Initially I played the games using the Mac keyboard, which works fine for many older games while you use the directional buttons. However, once I realised that the platform will be of interest, I joined my XBOX controller via bluetooth to the Mac.

Generally, all games appeared to play well with little lag. The only difficulty I had was with some lag when playing Pac Man. Otherwise all good and I will update this blog post with further experiences as I use the app. I have used streaming games sites before and despite having 1gb fibre, have suffered lag. This all seems good generally and probably is in part due to the simpler nature of the games and gameplay.

Playing the games has certainly been nostalgic and I can see myself having more plays of Monty on the run and other classics. I suspect the music from the old game scores may drive my family around the bend though!

Like most platforms, you can select an avatar and gamer name. You can also earn achievements and the platform has challenges and a community.

So far, it all seems impressive with a reasonable cost.

Edit – 10-Feb-24 – since writing this post I have also loaded the app on to my Samsung smart tv. It works really well and I was impressed after connecting an X-Box controller. Probably easier than playing on the Mac and streaming of games worked really well.

My attempt to play “Antstream” on the X-Box console was a none starter as you have to have a game pass. Also, I understand that you cannot sign in with my standard subscription and you effectively have a separate account.

While the games available will change and I still love Manic Miner, the Dizzy games that I like playing are currently not available.
