Do you have a subscription you simply couldn’t live without?
Like a lot of people, when I actually tally up all the TV and film subscriptions I’m paying for, the list gets terrifyingly long:
Netflix
Amazon Prime Video
HBO Max
Disney+
Channel 4 (paid)
Cineworld Unlimited
YouTube Premium Lite
I recently axed Paramount+, it just didn’t offer enough value for money to keep around.
When I look at the rest of the list, my feelings are mixed. Netflix isn’t anywhere near as strong as it used to be. Disney+ drops the occasional gem, and HBO Max can be pretty hit-and-miss. As for terrestrial TV, while we use ITVX a lot, I rely on Sky’s ad-skipping feature to fast-forward through the breaks rather than paying for ad-free. I no longer subscribe to ITVX as a result.
When it comes down to it, there are only two subscriptions I consider absolute must-haves:
1. YouTube Premium Lite
We watch a lot of YouTube and follow heaps of creators. With video lengths creeping up, going ad-free makes complete sense. The breadth of content on the platform is unbeatable and I watch at least an hour everyday.
2. Cineworld Unlimited
At just £18 a month, this is brilliant value for anyone who loves the big screen. Unlimited new releases, special event screenings, plus 25% off snacks.
