“Minions & Monsters” Review

I waited a few days after release to see this one. If I’m honest, a lot of animated films this year have been a bit of a letdown. However, on the back of online commentary that adults are enjoying it, I felt motivated to go and watch.

Remembering that this is a kids’ film with childish humour and a basic plot, I can still see the appeal. Set in late 1920s Hollywood, the film captures the era perfectly. The attention to detail and the historical and landmark references are amazing. I certainly appreciated the animation, which is superb and features possibly the best CGI of recent films. Illumination is an amazing studio and, in my opinion, they have created a film that surpasses the artwork of the competition, including Pixar.

The sound is also worth a special mention, as it is crafted well and atmospheric. While the film is well-paced and sets up the narrative effectively, the story itself remains a little formulaic. That said, I am sure many children will absolutely love it.

Make sure you stay behind for the credits, too. There are so many post-credit scenes that I lost count. Overall, it is a strong entry in the series, boasting excellent animation and offering an experience that adults can appreciate on a completely different level from the children.

Set in 1927 Old Hollywood, Minions & Monsters follows a brand-new tribe of the iconic yellow sidekicks who conquer the film industry and become overnight movie stars. Desperate to make their very own monster movie, the Minions set out to find actual, frightening creatures to star in it. Naturally, their chaotic ambitions backfire completely when they accidentally unleash real monsters onto an unsuspecting world—and lose their stardom in the process. To fix their mess, the Minions must band together, move behind the camera, and save the planet from the global mayhem they just created.
