In mid-April, just before heading off on a cruise, I bought the Switch 2 and published an early review. Since then, I’ve been using it every day and can honestly say that I love it. I’ve probably played it in handheld mode around 90% of the time and find it really convenient.
It just simply works. The interface is easy to use, the screen is impressive, and everything feels polished. To protect it, I’ve fitted a screen protector and I always place it in a carry case when it’s not charging in the dock, even if I’m just moving it around the house.
The Switch 2 interface is useful. I check the news section and eShop most days. There are usually plenty of software discounts available (apart from Nintendo’s own games, of course), which has helped me gradually build up my game collection.
Some people complain that the handheld isn’t particularly comfortable during long gaming sessions. I can understand that, although I usually play while lying down with the console resting on my chest, which solves the issue for me. The Joy-Cons have also performed well so far.
The portability and power packed into the system are impressive. During the cruise, it provided my daily gaming fix without any problems. I also bought the console using a buy now, pay later (6 months) scheme. This allowed the purchase while I sold my original Switch, XBox and some games to cover the cost. This worked well and the cost is now covered.
I also decided to upgrade my pro controller to a new pro controller 2. This new controller has some mappable buttons and the ability to turn on the Switch 2. No real major differences but I wanted the latest pro 2 controller.
I’ve also bought a second official Switch 2 dock and adapter for a second TV. Just convenient. I chose the official dock because it has a fan. Many third-party docks work well for around £30 but I managed to find an official second-hand one for £38. It made sense to buy it via e-Bay
The novelty of having this new console has meant that I’ve been playing a lot of Switch and Switch 2 games. Curious to find out how much time I’ve been spending, I’ve added the parental controls app so I can see how much time I’m gaming. Normally anything around 1.5 hours to 2 hours daily.
Games I’ve Been Playing
Mario Kart World
I love Mario Kart, but I’ve actually spent less time with this one than I expected. The main reason is that I personally find it much easier to play docked with a Pro Controller. I know I’ll put countless hours into it over the years, but for now it’s one I’ll return to later.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
The graphics are amazing, and I’ve spent a lot of time with this one. The Vatican sections were particularly impressive. This is one of several games that I’m dipping in and out of. Normally I focus on one game at a time, but the novelty of a new console has made me want to experience as many titles as possible.
Stray
An interesting concept and a visually stunning game. Part puzzle game, part adventure, and very relaxing overall. I managed to pick up the Switch 2 edition at around 40% off, which was a bonus. My only criticisms are the controls, particularly the context-sensitive jumping prompts, and the drone companion, which occasionally becomes a little tedious.
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
A really enjoyable game. I originally played it on the PS4, and this version is every bit as good. Great fun from start to finish.
Tetris 99
Perfect for a quick game of Tetris while competing against other players online.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Another title I picked up in a sale. It’s easy-going, fun, visually impressive and ideal for a relaxing gaming session.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars
I dug this out mainly to revisit Mario Sunshine. Unfortunately, I found the controls dreadful and quickly stopped playing. If the rumoured Switch 2 version eventually appears, hopefully it will include some much-needed control improvements.
Toki Tori 1 and 2
The original Toki Tori is an excellent slow-paced puzzle adventure. I absolutely love it and spent a lot of time playing it during the holiday. I’m far less enthusiastic about the sequel. Thankfully, it was cheap in a sale. For me, the original remains the superior game.
Super Mario 3D World
This is a fantastic game and looks great on a television. Classic Mario platforming at its best. In fact, writing this has reminded me that I should probably dig out Mario Odyssey again soon.
Nintendo Switch Online
The service offers a great selection of games. I’ve particularly enjoyed revisiting some GameCube titles and older classics such as Donkey Kong.
Mario Odyssey
I revisited this older game. It looks fantastic on the Switch 2. Good fun and addictive. I am on the last section to defeat Bowser on the moon again. Very enjoyable.
Zelda: Links Awakening
I bought this game a while back but didn’t progress very far. However, I’m really enjoying this playthrough. The only downside is it can be a bit tricky at times as the objectives aren’t always immediately obvious. For example, to obtain a particular key, I had to defeat three enemies in a specific order on screen for the treasure chest to appear. I ended up googling the solution because figuring it out on my own seemed like pure luck. Overall, it’s a very enjoyable and fun game with great graphics and top-down play.
Super Mario 3D World and Bowsers Fury
Another game I’m currently playing is 3D World. It’s particularly enjoyable on a second playthrough. Fury is entertaining but not quite as good.
Portal
It’s an old classic but mostly fun though I didn’t quite remember how frustrating it could get at times.
