Is this going to outshine last year’s Superman at the box office? Maybe. No doubt it will be better than that rubbish Supergirl film adaptation from the 80s. I went in expecting an average film due to the Rotten Tomatoes score, but I actually think it’s a much better film than the critics are giving it credit for.
It’s completely different from last year’s Superman in a good way. Where the last one felt a bit weak and nonsensical story wise, this one actually nails Kara’s backstory. It’s an easy, enjoyable watch, set in a much darker, apocalyptic sci-fi world. People are comparing it to Mad Max, which is fair, but I also got hints of Waterworld and some of that classic Star Wars or Star Trek world-building. It isn’t trying to be “cartoon bright” like Superman; it’s grungier, the effects look great, and the score is modern and decent which captures the grunge feel.
Milly Alcock is genuinely convincing as Kara, and she’s got good support from Eve Ridley. Jason Momoa pops up for a bit, a small role, but it matters and Matthias Schoenaerts is excellent as the villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills. This version of Kara is more edgy and darker with some surprises. Light humour is also injected.
What I really liked is that it’s not just another Earth-based story. We’re spared the usual Metropolis setting for a more sci-fi planetary adventure. Most of the film is just Kara finding herself on this interplanetary adventure, long before she’s even wearing the Supergirl suit.
Ignore the critics on this one. It’s a really enjoyable film, just watch it.
Based on the Woman of Tomorrow graphic novel, the film follows a hardened, grief-stricken Kara Zor-El who is wandering the galaxy trying to escape the memories of Krypton’s destruction. Her directionless drifting is cut short when she crosses paths with Ruthye, an angry young alien girl determined to hunt down Krem of the Yellow Hills, the ruthless mercenary who murdered her father. After Krem steals Kara’s spaceship and leaves her beloved dog Krypto dying from a poisonous dart, Supergirl reluctantly teams up with the young girl on a gritty, Mad Max-style interstellar journey of vengeance across the cosmos. Along the way, they navigate dystopian worlds and cross paths with the chaotic bounty hunter Lobo, all while Kara grapples with her own trauma and the true cost of revenge.
