I returned from a cruise in early May and I wondered how difficult it would be to get back into calorie counting and regular walking after lots of food choices. Thankfully, it was much easier easier getting back on track, than after Christmas. I think that is partly because Christmas tends to involve constant snacking, whereas a cruise is more about larger meals balanced with plenty of walking.
Of course, I put on a few pounds during the two week holiday, but I think I have lost the weight quite quickly.
The biggest challenge was re-establishing my exercise routine. During the cruise, I was often walking between 12,000 and 22,000 steps throughout the day at a relaxed pace, but returning home and heading straight into dedicated 5-mile walks felt tougher than expected, especially with the warmer weather.
I also discovered that my B12 levels had been low which affected energy levels. I am now taking steps to correct that but I am now walking 3 miles a day during the week (while I rebuild my stamina and energy) and 5 miles at the weekend. I am walking at a slightly slower pace than before. No doubt this is in part due to the current warmer weather also affecting my performance.
Overall though, I found it surprisingly easy to return to calorie counting and maintaining a calorie deficit. I have learned that the choice really is between being careful or gradually putting weight back on. I never want to return to carrying serious extra weight again, especially after experiencing so many benefits from being lighter and healthier. It is strangely satisfying to know I am being careful.
That does not mean cutting out treats completely. I still enjoy them, but it is all about moderation and balance.
