After the highs of the first film, this latest instalment had a tough act to follow. This time, the story expands into the Mario Galaxy universe, bringing with it a noticeably broader and more ambitious number of characters.
I opted to watch the film in 3D, following plenty of hype and anticipation. While I had been looking forward to it, some of the early reviews were less than encouraging.
Although not created in native 3D, the fully CGI nature of the film means the conversion is of a high standard. The animation throughout is outstanding, and Yoshi, in particular, has a habit of stealing the show.
The storytelling falters and it often feels more like an ensemble piece with too many characters vying for screen time. While familiar faces from the games are introduced, this detracts from the story’s cohesion, never quite matching the first film’s level.
Star Fox makes an appearance that I initially expected to be a cameo, but quickly develops into something more substantial. It seems very much like a test for how the character could translate to the big screen. Interestingly, some of the most effective 3D moments come during the sequences with Fox.
At times, the film feels like a patchwork of short set pieces rather than a single, well-structured story.
Overall, it’s a missed chance to build on the original’s quality and storytelling. During my screening a couple even walked out though many children enjoyed it. Older viewers might feel more hesitant about paying to see a future instalment.
Visually impressive, with excellent voice work, but ultimately let down by a weak and unfocused story.
Following the events of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario and Luigi are pulled into a much bigger adventure when a cosmic threat emerges beyond the Mushroom Kingdom.
Teaming up with Princess Peach, Toad, and new ally Yoshi, they journey into outer space—travelling across strange planets and gravity-defying galaxies. Along the way, they encounter the mysterious Rosalina and her Lumas, who help guide them through the universe.
The main threat comes from Bowser Jr., who is attempting to seize control of cosmic power and expand his father’s empire across the galaxy. In some versions of the story, he may even be working with other villains to achieve domination on a universal scale.
