If you’re in the mood for a British comedy that is more gently amusing than laugh-out-loud funny, this one will likely fit the bill.
Martin Clunes stars as pub landlord Mick, who is trying to keep his struggling village pub afloat with the help of his family and the local community. The film also features Jonno Davies as Mick’s estranged son Cal, James Buckley as Mick’s brother Jake, and Gabriella Wilde as Cal’s ex-girlfriend Abi. Mark Addy appears as Paxman, a loyal customer and family friend.

The main cast are all enjoyable to watch, with strong performances across the board. Jonno Davies and Gabriella Wilde have particularly good chemistry as Cal and Abi, while James Buckley brings a likeable, dry humour to the role of Jake. Martin Clunes is well suited to the lead role and delivers a convincing performance. Luke Treadaway also makes some excellent brief appearances as Abi’s intentionally unlikeable boyfriend, Pritchard.

The film blends light humour with a few more serious moments, making it an easy and watchable experience. It’s ideal when you want something relaxing and undemanding. It captures the charm of an old-fashioned English village and community, the kind that feels increasingly rare today, and highlights a sense of community spirit that can sometimes be hard to find.
It’s a short, gentle film that leaves you smiling. Simple to follow and quietly entertaining for anyone who enjoys British comedy films. I enjoyed it more than I expected to and you may want to ignore harsher critic reviews calling it predictable etc.
