I noticed this was showing as an advanced screening at my local cinema and thought it was worth checking out. The trailer animation had looked fantastic for this film, which is generally released on the 13th of February.

The film also features a predominantly British cast including Asa Butterfield Alison Steadman and Rob Brydon.

Stitch Head is about a small stitched creature created by a mad scientist Professor Erasmus (Rob Brydon), ignored by the professor who focuses on developing larger and more terrifying monsters. Loneliness and neglect leave Stitch Head to keep the castle running until a manipulative showman attempts to exploit him as a sideshow attraction.

Based on a book series, the film explores themes of feeling forgotten and overlooked, friendship and self-worth. However, these strong messages are overshadowed by a generally weak storyline and average musical numbers.

The animation style draws from various influences and the monsters are reminiscent of Monsters Inc. characters but not quite as cute. They have a Toy Story-like charm too. The animation artwork is nothing short of spectacular.

This family film is best enjoyed by young viewers and provides parents with a break. It does lack adult humour and as a parent, I’d struggle to recommend it for your children unless it’s a bargain at £2 on a Saturday morning. Don’t pay full price for this one.

While I’m not the intended audience, I usually enjoy a good story-driven animated film. At 92 minutes, it might entertain a few young children for a short while and could be helpful for some with its underlying messaging.

Overall this is an average film that story wise never quite lives up to its visual promise. I’m surprised it hasn’t gone straight to a streaming platform. It’s likely to fare better there than in cinemas.
