I probably watched the first film nearly a decade ago in 2016 with my daughter. While I recognised the sloth and the two main characters, I didn’t recall much about the original story or film.
My wife and I booked an early evening showing. It’s a film we wouldn’t have paid to see, but our unlimited cinema pass allows us to enjoy releases that we might otherwise miss.

This is, of course, a blockbuster Disney movie for children and families. I hoped for a fun film with some adult humour (that goes over kids heads). Thankfully the film starts with a small recap, though it could have been expanded a bit more to jog my memory!

The film’s opening was a full-on, fast-paced rush into the action. It boasted amazing animation and featured voices from Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin, Idris Elba, Macauley Culkin and even Michael J Fox (as Michael J The Fox) and many more.
Thankfully after time, the pace slows a little to allow you to catch your breath. No doubt enjoyable for children. I would have liked to see a little more adult humour which lacked compared to other similar films.
Story wise, main characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde flee after being framed. Their escape leads them to uncover a conspiracy involving the city’s founding family and a quest to clear their names.
As is typical of cartoon cinema, the film builds to a fast-paced conclusion. Before the final ending, numerous events unfold and a grand musical finale to close the titles. Certainly a feel good finish.
I’d recommend it for families and children but probably not just for adults unless you’re a Disney fan or can get in on a cinema pass. The brilliant animation is worth appreciating though.
