When the chance came to watch this film on release day, I booked tickets. The trailer looked interesting and I thought it might be entertaining.

Elizabeth Olsen stars in this romantic comedy as Joan. After passing, she’s given a week in the afterlife to decide how she’ll spend eternity. She must choose between her recent husband, whom she’s spent her entire life with, and her first husband who died when young.

This slightly dark romantic comedy becomes surreal especially towards the end, reminiscent of “Being John Malkovich” in that regard for at least a small part of the film.

While the film’s outcome and choices are somewhat predictable, it does have some unexpected elements. The pacing begins slow but gradually picks up.

It’s not a laugh-out-loud experience but it’s gently amusing. The performances were good, with Miles Teller as Larry (the recent husband) and Callum Turner as Luke (the first) both having realistic chemistry with Olsen (Joan).

Anna, portrayed by Da’Vine Joy Randolph, truly shone with a joyful and entertaining performance as an afterlife coordinator. Her performance was complemented by John Early’s portrayal of Ryan (the second coordinator).

Overall, it’s an enjoyable and definitely a great date night film. Near the end Joan’s reflection on relationships and her choices is particularly thought-provoking. Worth a watch.

“The second season is nearly done, and somehow I’ve only just discovered this show. I’m about to start the series one finale and honestly, what a great watch it’s been. It feels like 24 meets Lost, with plenty of twists and surprises along the way. I’m hoping it just keeps getting better.“
