Last month I explored the numerous benefits of weight loss (here). However, I noticed a significant potential downside and wondered if there were others. Could I compile a list of health or appearance-related disadvantages excluding things like walking time?

Drawbacks
- Aging – Carrying weight stretches your skin. While my skin’s elasticity has generally been good and I haven’t developed bingo wings under the arms, I’d say losing weight on my face has slightly aged my appearance. Perhaps my hands have aged too but the neck, which can show signs of loss and excess skin, looks good.
- Body temperature – Carrying extra padding reduces the sensation of cold. I’ve definitely noticed I feel colder these days and my wife has noticed and commented on that. I definitely need to wrap up more to stay warm.
- Metabolism – As your weight loss slows, so does your metabolism. Therefore, you’ll need to make a permanent change to your food intake to avoid regaining the lost weight.
The minor drawbacks are a small price to pay for weight loss. Hopefully point one will be more temporary if some elasticity returns. I’m also trying skincare products. Points two and three are likely more permanent but perhaps point three is linked to regular exercise to maintain a higher metabolism.
I’ve definitely developed a new mindset for maintaining a healthy weight.
