I used to subscribe to Apple TV+ regularly but the limited content and price hikes make it more sensible to subscribe occasionally. I also understand that “Apple TV+” is being rebranded to “Apple TV” and while I was writing this review the app logo and name have changed. A confusing name change as the app now has the same name as the separate Apple TV streaming box hardware.

Using the app, I’ve enjoyed shows like Slow Horses, Trying and The Morning Show. Given Apple TV+’s reputation for high-quality programming, you definitely get what you pay for. The app is certainly known for offering limited but superior streaming shows. It’s clear the app needs more shows and I hope plans are underway to produce more content. They are also slowly building a film catalogue.

My wife and I had been eagerly anticipating the return of Slow Horses and so we renewed our subscription to watch the latest series. I’m also enjoying The Last Frontier and might even watch Down Cemetery Road.

As a hardware and software company, Apple is known for its quality products. For this review I am using the Apple TV+ app on a Sky Stream box.

However, the Sky Stream version of Apple TV+ seems restricted. It only offers Apple TV streaming shows and films and doesn’t allow you to play any TV or films you’ve purchased through Apple. This is a shame and likely because the app runs on Sky hardware, which also sells TVs and films through the Sky Store. On the positive side, the MLS sports pass is available for anyone interested.

The biggest issue I’ve encountered with this app was the slow loading time for TV and films to stream with the circle spinner appearing sometime before playing. It was a bit odd because some other apps load faster on our Sky Stream hardware. However, while I was preparing this review over a few weeks, the app’s responsiveness has improved. An update appears to have occurred to change the logo and it now seems to run better, which is good news for potential under-the-hood improvements.

The stream quality is always good and 4K looks fantastic. The app offers additional controls to adjust settings to your preferences.

While there are some decent shows to watch on Apple TV, I don’t think it’s worth the ongoing subscription. It’s expensive and you’re likely better off binging occasionally all the shows you want. Just check before doing so that all episodes are available or will become available while you subscribe.

An okay service that is gradually improving, as the available App Library gradually increases.
