I was incredibly excited about this generation of games consoles. Having owned a PS3 and a PS4, I naturally wanted the PS5. As a fan of both Xbox and PlayStation, I had high hopes for this generation. When it was released in 2020, the PlayStation 5 looked impressive, and its hardware was a significant leap forward at the time. However, like many others, I struggled to get my hands on a machine initially. Finally, in late August 2021, I managed to purchase one.

Reflecting on the PS5, I’ve noticed an interesting observation: few games released this generation are actually PlayStation exclusives. Spider-Man games, Ratchet & Clank, Astro Bot, and Sackboy are the exceptions. It also seems many of these exclusives were released earlier in the generation to support the launch rather than more recently added titles. The result is that in recent years, I play on the console far less than I would have expected.
Perhaps in the future, exclusives will become less important, except for console launches. Maybe that has already purposefully happened. It’s also possible that more games will be timed exclusives for one console before their general release. This trend is already evident, as seen with the new Raiders of the Lost Ark game, which was initially Xbox exclusive but is now available on PlayStation.
While some of the future PlayStation exclusive games listed on Google aren’t particularly interesting to me, a couple of general console releases like the new Bond and GTA games for next year look really good. The only exclusive for PlayStation that catches my eye is the Wolverine game. I’ve already preordered Bond and I’m quite excited about that one.
I’m currently enjoying Dead Island 2, and I’m also keen to play the Indiana Jones game. However, I’m waiting for the price to drop a bit because it’s still quite expensive, which is another issue with games this generation. While I’ve always wanted to play Dead Island 2, I only bought it recently during a sale for £13. I tend to wait longer now after games releases for cheaper prices.
Online articles suggest that PlayStation is no longer prioritising exclusives as much. I also wonder if the impact of Covid affected studios. However, there’s some good news: some Xbox games, like Gears, are arriving on PlayStation. It would be great if the Halo collection also made the jump. During previous generations I have often owned an XBox and PlayStation. Not any more due to cost but older XBox games on PlayStation would be ideal.
Is it just me who feels disappointed with the PS5 games released so far this generation? I wonder how long before they start pushing the PS6 on us.
