My hometown in Warwickshire, like many other towns across the country, has become increasingly built up. Heavy traffic, congestion, and new developments are everywhere. Even walking can be a hassle, with pavements becoming congested. It’s easy to focus on the negatives rather than looking for the positives.
Seeking more off-the-beaten-track walks, I ventured into quieter neighbourhoods, following footpaths and shortcuts. This led me to hidden gems and country walks/footpaths that I had previously overlooked. I knew of a nearby nature reserve with walkways and parks, but I hadn’t fully appreciated them until now.
One evening, out of curiosity, I followed a path that would sometimes split off, leading to different areas. I quickly discovered wooded areas near parks that I wasn’t familiar with (though they were on my doorstep) and an amazing bluebell wood after walking through a local cemetery. The bluebell wood was incredible, about a mile long, and had exits back to the local development at different stages. I kept going and found a stream and then a local canal. This opened up a whole new world of local country park-type walks that take you back to nature. I also noticed a more friendly and leisurely group of passersby who greeted each other. I discovered a hidden and forgotten section of my town, which was tranquil and offered opportunities to see canal boats and wildlife. Exercising in this area is definitely more interesting, and you’re away from much of the cars and traffic.
The canal paths were particularly beautiful and all on my doorstep. While there are many things I don’t like about my town and county, this demonstrated that there’s still plenty to explore if I keep my eyes open.
