After a two-and-a-half-year wait since buying tickets, my wife and I got to see Peter Kay live at BP Pulse – Birmingham (previously Resorts World) or otherwise known as the NEC.
As a Friday night, it was a fab way to start the weekend. On arrival at the venue, we ordered some food. We were limited for choice as Resorts World opposite the arena was a busy place, but we opted for “Karaage” and had some chicken burgers. There are lots of possible options to eat, but many places had very long queues and were partially guided by queue lengths to help make our decision.
Show-wise, the start was advertised for 8 p.m. and it began a little later as the queues were quite long to get in. We didn’t have much time to get to our seats for 8 after clearing security, but we just about did it. Fortunately, we didn’t miss anything. However, there’s no support for this gig, which is a bit odd, but there must be a reason behind it.
The venue was quite strict on its no photography/video policy. Those attempting were quickly stopped. In part, I can understand for the end of show to stop spoilers, but for the most part, all you would get is likely a fuzzy pic of a man on stage.
Show-wise, it lasted for two hours, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We had pretty good seats and could see Peter, and the video screens were excellent. I will avoid writing about any jokes/subjects to avoid spoilers, but what I can say is that you will see Peter do some of the things he is known for— camera on crowd and funny takes of music lyrics. The show allowed complete escapism for a couple of hours, and I was laughing non-stop. My wife enjoyed herself, but maybe not quite to the same extent as I did.
There are encores which are very funny. Some had already left thinking it was the end of the show and possibly missed the best bit. The encore is quite long and very memorable. Let’s just say a fitting end to the show and a little different for a comedy show. Very fun and it had me leaving the arena in a good mood.
One little moan though is about the Resorts World overflow car park where we parked. If you spend over £20 in Resorts World, you get your parking for £3, which is a good deal. But the machine to pay was out of order. Therefore, all the cars leaving the venue were inconvenienced as a queue of cars built up as car park attendants took the car park fees from drivers as you left. Sort your car park machines out, NEC/Resorts World.
Overall though, we had a very enjoyable evening out. If you get a chance to see Peter Kay, do buy tickets. Peter does say he realises that many bought the tickets quite a few years ago and is appreciative. A very funny and memorable night out.
