Having used iPhones since about 2008/09, there was only a brief spell when I tried Android and Windows phones for 6 months. I quickly discovered I missed my iPhone experience and that the iPhone would be my go to device. I do enjoy the iPhone hardware and software experience.
The latest iPhones were released on September 20th 2024 and I pre-ordered the week before. Not the easiest process to upgrade via Sky Mobile but nothing is these days.
The good news is that the phone arrived on time as expected and was delivered by DPD.
I went for the 128gb white titanium pro model. An iPhone design that does not change hugely but a notable screen on this model with a small increase in size to 6.3” and a small bezel.
My previous iPhone was the 14 pro and it is noticeable that the weight is less and the phone weight is better balanced. The iPhone 14 Pro always felt a little too heavy.
The main change for me is the action button that was introduced last year and the new camera button. The action button really isn’t that ground breaking but it does of course offer customisation of how you can use it. It’s your choice whether you set to silence the phone, use for torch etc.
The new camera control button though is a little more interesting. It is more than just a switch to turn on the camera or press the shutter, it is sensitive to touch and gives control of additional functionality such as zoom. It will take a little getting used to but I am sure will be a good addition. I also understand that some of the button’s capabilities will improve with future software updates.
In recent years Apple has been adding small features that at times are overhyped (Dynamic Island) but as a collective of features, really do make a difference overtime. While I have not had chance to properly play with the camera, early portrait shots look rather good.
This phone is currently unprotected so I am being very careful with it while I wait for the new case to arrive.
A big part of this new iPhone 16 range is support of the new Apple Intelligence AI features and new Siri. we have a little longer to wait but those with iPhone 15 pro/pro plus and the new iPhone 16 models will be able to take advantage of iOS 18.1 hopefully very soon. I will of course write about that when released and my thoughts about Apple Intelligence.
Currently the phone is running IOS 18. I won’t get too much into that but the main changes are the new control centre and more customisation options. I also like the new passwords app which will likely result in me retiring my Microsoft Authenticator.
With the phone including the new A18 pro chip, it does feel zippy. The screen is also rather good.
As for the styling, I have generally always picked the white iPhones and my last iPhone was the exception. Now back to white which is rather lovely looking.
The oddity about this iteration of the iPhone is that it will not come into its own until Apple Intelligence is released. However, I am looking forward to that and being one of the first users.
Edit – after one week’s usage, I am really happy with this phone. I have had more of a play with the camera/capture button and it is rather useful. It took a while to work out some of this functionality but after 5 mins playing, I was soon able to work it all out. Now just bring out Apple Intelligence.
