Apple have released their new IOS 17.2 update for the iPhone today. An expected feature to be added was the new journal app. Software which helps you document memories as a diary or just a straightforward record of what you have been up to.

The journal taps into data already available on your iPhone, including exercise data for walks, photos and locations. You can then add supporting text to support memories and photos.

Within the iPhone settings, you can set the access that the app has – do you wish to record locations visited, lock the journal or perhaps grant access to record audio and capture photos etc.

While you can regularly access and update info as you wish, the app is designed in a fashion that it captures data automatically and is available for you to view when convenient. You can then enhance and add to the journal at a later date. Certainly the journal helps jog your memory by recording events and you can of course set the journal to private.

To help keep you on track, you can set the app to remind you to document thoughts. A filter also exists to help you search for events and memories. When creating new entries, the app makes recommendations and shows recent activity that you may well wish to expand upon. It also prompts you to reflect and has questions to answer such as “What is your best quality”, “What was the last great idea that you had that helped others”. Reflections that will help you document a good insight into you and your personality.

While a straightforward and easy app to use, it will be interesting to see how they enhance the app in future. It would be handy to export data as it could be a useful reference of material to support other tools and ways of work such as blogging.

The app will automatically appear on your iPhone Home Screen once you update.

Comment below if you have tried the new app and your thoughts.

Looks like it could be massively interesting to look back on in our own lives. Would our decendents have access I wonder? A new tool for family researchers? Of course terrible for murderers and criminals in general!
