Some of you will recognise Molly. She previously featured on blog post about animal rescue.

Molly and daughter Amelia

Molly was rescued when she was 1.5 years and has lived with us now for over a year.

Cats are super independent pets with so many varied personality traits. They are also extremely clever animals.

We decided to get a cat as a pet as we wanted our daughter to have a furry companion. Though the decision has benefited all the family and Molly.

It is extremely therapeutic and relaxing talking to a cat. It helps relieve stress/anxiety and can reduce loneliness. Even just watching them sleep can be enjoyable, particularly when Molly is spread out and looking very spoilt and loved.

Molly is a very loyal cat who follows Amelia around the house, keeps an eye on her and sleeps with her. She is a playful cat who Amelia will often play with, and Molly has a very loving nature particularly towards Amelia. Molly is also very patient and puts up with the constant attention of a 13 year old.

I have had many cats over the years and had forgotten how intelligent that they are. They can be quite bossy animals as well, communicating when they want food and when you need to do jobs for them like open doors. Amelia has actually trained Molly to sit and do clever tricks. It can be overlooked by many but you can train cats and this video highlights possibilities.

Clever Molly

The fact that they are so independent and choose what they want to do and where to go is also a benefit. I love watching Molly look out the window on the ground floor. If she decides she is not getting the best view, she then runs upstairs to look at the event from a higher window. So smart and amusing to watch.

They really do become a proper part of the family and we are always talking to her, checking she is okay. As they can easily live for a long time to 18 years, they become part of the family. You miss them and look forward to seeing them when you have been out. Molly often waiting and greeting you.

I have rescued cats previously that were as old as 11 and I still had 5 years with them. My sister has recently done just this with a lovely boy cat called Foxy.

Another benefit of cat ownership is that they are easy to look after. You just need to support their routine regularly. Molly expects to be fed at around 8am so I had a nice greeting from her this morning meowing outside our bedroom door for mealtime. They become the house owner and you are the tenant doing as they say. She also keeps the house insect free for us and catches most spiders.

Getting Molly was the best decision, as so many benefits of ownership. Cats really do make fantastic pets. They are just so unique and intelligent with their own individual quirks. If you want a pet and happy to take on a long term commitment, you cannot beat adopting a cat.

Thank you Molly!
