It was a good start to the month when I lost 3 pounds at my weigh-in. A few weeks later, I finally hit my total weight loss target of 5 stone.
I’m a pretty determined individual, and when I commit to something, I don’t give up. When I started my weight loss attempt in January 2025, I knew it would be more of a lifestyle change. I’m so pleased to have hit this target, which acknowledges my efforts over the past 10 months.

As a lifestyle change, I’ll continue walking daily and measuring my calories. While I’m happy to lose more weight, I’m already at a comfortable weight, which is a noticeable loss.
While I feel better about myself and losing weight was my main goal, the change has brought about other additional benefits beyond just fitting into smaller clothes. In no particular order, here are some expected and unexpected benefits:
Additional Benefits
- Blood Pressure – Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised, but my BP readings have improved significantly. Even when I’m stressed, I find that the BP reading is still low.
- Aches/Pains – Last year, I certainly suffered from what may have been some symptoms of arthritis in a couple of my fingers on my right hand. I had a swollen joint and difficulty gripping to open items. Thankfully, the swelling has gone and my grip appears to be restored. This is amazing, as the issue would likely have worsened otherwise.
- Mental Health – I’ve always been fortunate that while I can feel stressed at times, I believe I’ve never had any serious mental health issues. However, I definitely feel much better mentally now, with a strength and resilience that have improved my mood and overall well-being.
- Water Retention – This had definitely become an issue during the summers of previous years, with swollen feet and ankles. Thankfully, it’s no longer an issue.
- Toilet – Let’s just say healthier packages! I also tend to have stopped waking very early to pee.
- Clothes Shopping – I may never be Mr. Fashion, but I do have choices again. No longer faced with difficulties getting my clothes sizes, I’m now in the normal range. When you do get bigger, your sizes become less common and harder to find.
- Recreation – Last year, when I was on a cruise, I couldn’t go on the ships’ high walk ropes. We’re booked to go again in six months, and as I am now significantly below the weight requirement, I’m looking forward to doing the high walk ropes.
- Exercise – I’ve enjoyed walking daily now, something I didn’t do before starting this journey. It also helps me clear my head, listen to music, and get out.
- Food Mindset – Counting calories has become the new norm, even when I can’t count accurately (like with homemade items, where I have to guess). This awareness has helped me understand portion sizes. Remember, everything in moderation so I do have the odd treat
- Energy – I’m much fitter and less tired now, so I don’t usually fall asleep in the early evening. I can keep going longer before feeling exhausted. I can still suffer from this during particularly busy periods, but less often.
- Snoring – I’ve stopped, and that has to help with a healthier relationship.
The additional benefits, particularly the improved grip and hand function, are a massive win. I’m so glad I’ve helped improve my health.
As Christmas approaches, I need to consider how I’ll handle this time of indulgence. I’ll enjoy the seasonal foods I love, but I’ll make sure I don’t overdo it. I’ll definitely be in a much better position in January than I was this year, and that alone will be worth celebrating.
