Following a car accident, Amy is left unable to remember the last eight years of her life and attempts to remember who she once was.
In many ways, Amy has reverted to the happier, more optimistic version of herself—the one who existed before a series of personal tragedies, including a failed marriage, that pushed her into becoming a more hardened and cutthroat professional. This creates immediate tension in her present-day life, especially as she attempts to reconnect with people she had perhaps had created issues with.
My wife and I have already watched the first two episodes, which we enjoyed. The first season runs for 10 episodes, airing weekly. Thanks to its success in the US, a second (and longer) season is already underway. Hopefully, the UK broadcast will roll straight into it without a long break, as has happened with some other dramas.
One of the strengths of Doc lies in its storytelling potential. The flashback format doesn’t just build upon Amy’s backstory—it could also allow the writers to explore new story elements. If a character dies, they could still appear in flashbacks.
The main supporting cast is an ensemble which includes complex characters to carry entertaining stories while no doubt also juggling the usual “patient of the week” format that we expect with medical dramas:
- Dr. Michael Hamda (Omar Metwally) – Amy’s ex-husband and the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer.
- Dr. Richard Miller (Scott Wolf) – who has stepped into Amy’s role as Chief of Internal Medicine.
- Dr. Gina Walker (Amirah Vann) – Amy’s best friend and a neuropsychiatrist.
- Dr. Jake Heller (Jon-Michael Ecker) – Amy’s lover, though she no longer remembers their relationship.
