While special event screenings are rarely cheap, I always enjoy concert films for the sound quality and that close-up, immersive cinema experience.
I’d hoped to see Twenty One Pilots at Resorts World last year when they toured, but missed out, so this felt like a great alternative. As an event screening it was priced slightly higher than a standard film at £16.50 per adult. However, as a Cineworld Unlimited member, I paid £7, which felt pretty reasonable.
Although it was probably brilliant to see in IMAX, my nearest screen is at Birmingham NEC, so I opted to see it locally in 2D instead.
I’m more familiar with their singles, but I enjoy their sound enough to watch a concert film. I’d describe their style as a blend of rock and electro-rap. Two hugely talented musicians performing to an enormous crowd in Mexico with confidence and creativity.
Filmed over two nights, the footage feels cinematic and immersive, essentially capturing the Clancy World Tour in full. There are a handful of backstage moments and short segments with the band, but the focus is firmly on the live performance.
The staging is constantly evolving, with costume changes, dramatic lighting, visual effects and even shifts in performance locations within the venue itself.
While I recognised the bigger singles, I also really enjoyed the less familiar tracks. I’ll definitely listen more to their albums now.
If you’re thinking of seeing it, you’ll need to be quick. Event screenings like this don’t tend to hang around for long with only a short release window.
