Facebook Marketplace has a fairly poor reputation when it comes to buyers wasting sellers’ time, although no doubt there are plenty of poor sellers out there too.

Recently, to help fund my new Switch 2, I started selling a few items for local collection. At first, I was quite lucky. Around four buyers contacted me, negotiated on price, and then turned up exactly when they said they would.

In my experience, those interested in higher-priced items tended to be the most reliable. They asked genuine questions and seemed serious about buying. The cheaper items, on the other hand, attracted more time wasters, often opening with “Can I pick up now?” before radio silence.

Despite this, selling with no fees is a strong incentive to use Facebook Marketplace. I also found it incredibly quick and easy to create listings. Because buyers collect items themselves, there’s no faffing about with packaging, postage, or dealing with delivery issues. For local buyers, it’s a fast and convenient way to pick something up the same day. There’s also the added benefit of being able to show the item in person before money changes hands.

My family sells quite regularly and tends to use other platforms more often. They appreciate the speed and simplicity of Marketplace when creating listings, but ultimately other services allow buyers to commit to a purchase and generally provide greater protection for both parties.

That got me wondering whether there were any hidden features that might make Marketplace easier to use. In truth, I couldn’t find many when exploring the settings. I did come across the custom message feature, which can be configured for both buyers and sellers, although it probably offers more value to buyers than sellers.

I suppose Facebook Marketplace is closer to a traditional classified adverts service than a fully fledged selling platform, which is why it doesn’t handle payments directly. As a result, you have to take the rough with the smooth. If more formal purchasing options were introduced, they would no doubt come with additional costs and fees.

For a quick local sale, Marketplace can be incredibly useful. You just need to accept that not every enquiry, particularly those sent late at night, will turn into a genuine sale. However, the buyers who purchased from me very quickly allowed me to recoup the money to pay for my Switch 2. Thank you.
