Despite Sky being a popular platform, let’s be honest, its (Sky) original productions have not always been the strongest. Many have looked a little cheap, with corners seemingly cut during production to keep budgets down. However, Sky appears to have reduced the number of Originals it commissions and, as a result, quality may be improving. Sometimes less really is more. Recent successes such as Sweetpea and The Day of the Jackal are good examples of this upward trend.

This latest offering, filmed largely in Wales, is surprisingly good. Fast-paced and well made, it delivers a strong story alongside plenty of action. It’s an easy watch and one we ended up bingeing over just a few nights. The series has already proved popular enough to secure a second season, with production expected to begin later this year. Fans of shows such as Line of Duty will likely find plenty to enjoy here.

The two main leads are Izuka Hoyle as Amber, a prison officer tasked with escorting and protecting Tibor Stone, played by Tahar Rahim. It’s an interesting casting choice, as neither actor is especially well known to UK audiences, yet both have already enjoyed award-winning success. They make for compelling leads, and this marks Hoyle’s first major leading role.

Ignore the rather average, slightly AI-generated-looking promotional posters. Don’t let them put you off. This one is well worth a watch.

Prisoner is a fast-paced British thriller that follows Amber Todd, a prison transport officer returning to work after maternity leave, and Tibor Stone, a dangerous criminal being moved to testify against a powerful crime syndicate. When their convoy is violently ambushed, the pair find themselves handcuffed together and forced to flee across the country while being hunted by ruthless attackers. As they struggle to survive and evade capture, mistrust gradually gives way to an uneasy partnership, with both discovering that the conspiracy surrounding them runs far deeper than they first imagined.
