⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4

Catching this as an early Cineworld Unlimited preview ahead of its 10 April release, this was a film that immediately stood out thanks to the music in the trailer, which suggested energy and humour.

Directed by James McAvoy, the film stars Samuel Bottomley (Billy “Silibil” Boyd), Séamus McLean Ross (Gavin “Brains” Bain) and Lucy Halliday (Mary Boyd). The three leads are all excellent, each bringing something distinct to their roles. Although Lucy Halliday plays more of a supporting character, she appears regularly and is a real highlight, providing a grounded and consistent presence throughout the film.

While the film is based on a true story, it is most likely only based loosely on real events. The story is slightly predictable, with the two leads gradually losing touch with reality, leading to fallout and strained relationships. That said, it remains a strong and entertaining watch, backed by an excellent soundtrack.

The humour lands best in the earlier stages, with the tone becoming more serious as both the music and narrative develop. Thankfully, it ends on a positive note, leaving a genuinely feel-good impression.

I hadn’t heard of “Silibil and Brains” before watching this, but the film is based on a book by Gavin Bain, which could be worth a read. There is also a closing sequence featuring real footage of the artists, which is well worth staying for.

I watched the film with my wife and we both enjoyed it. If you remember the group, or enjoy rap and hip hop, this should be right up your street.

Two aspiring rappers from Dundee reinvent themselves as a Californian hip-hop duo, adopting fake accents and identities to break into the American music scene. Against the odds, their bold scheme pays off, landing them a record deal and a taste of the fame they’ve always craved.

But as their success grows, so does the pressure to maintain the illusion. With their friendship strained and the truth closing in, the pair must navigate the consequences of living a lie in an industry built on image and authenticity.

“The second season is nearly done, and somehow I’ve only just discovered this show. I’m about to start the series one finale and honestly, what a great watch it’s been. It feels like 24 meets Lost, with plenty of twists and surprises along the way. I’m hoping it just keeps getting better.“
