For anyone who subscribes, or is thinking of subscribing, to YouTube Premium Lite, some additional features are now being rolled out.
These new additions are genuinely useful and add a bit more flexibility to the plan. While the Lite option was already strong for ad-free viewing, these updates help increase the overall value of the subscription.
These features will be rolled out to all regions and users in the coming weeks. As someone in the UK, I already have access to the following:
Background play
Now you can also watch most videos in the background while you multitask or save them to watch offline later.
While I probably won’t use this feature much, it could be useful. I tested this functionality on my iPhone without any issues. I did struggle though on my Mac, but I may have been doing something wrong.

Enjoy most videos anytime, anywhere
No Wi-Fi or data? No problem. Download your favorite videos to watch offline.
This is very handy and I’ll probably use it on my iPhone. It’s especially useful for avoiding data charges during travel on a coach or train, where you might want to watch something on your phone without consistent data or WiFi connection.
Audio listening
Play most of your favorite videos with the screen off
Multitask by locking your phone, and the video will keep playing in the background.
This is probably my favourite new feature. It lets you listen to videos while locking your screen, which is really handy for vlogs. You can just hear the sound, perhaps while walking with headphones. As expected, it won’t work with music which is fair enough (unless you have full premium).
