What major historical (or cultural) events do you remember?

Culturally, the earliest memory I have is the death of Elvis in 1977. I was in junior school and my best friend told me at lunchtime that the King had died. I think he had seen that headline on the front page of “The Sun” newspaper.

I knew of Elvis at the time but I wasn’t familiar with the nickname “The King”. I remember thinking, “We have a Queen!”

I’m a big fan of his music and he is very memorable. I fondly recall watching his films and biopics at the time. I’ll definitely be watching the new concert film coming out in February and I have already booked my ticket.

My next memories are more fitting as historical, covering Royal history. These include Charles and Diana’s wedding and of course her death.

My family was on holiday in America at the time and we were travelling. We didn’t see the wedding live on TV and watched it later, but I clearly remember all the build-up in the UK and at school. The news and some of the hype and stories while on holiday in the US were also quite memorable. I remember thinking it odd to see the event featuring familiar faces and places but from many miles away.

Diana’s death is equally memorable and shocking, one of those moments you always remember where you were when you found out. Early on the Sunday morning in 1997 I received a mobile phone call from a friend who told me I’d never guess who had died. It was shocking and unforgettable given her fame and young age.
