Having volunteered for organisations in the past, I was looking for a new local opportunity. While walking in my area of Rugby, Warwickshire, I noticed a rise in public accessible defibrillators last year. It turned out this was organised by a charity in memory of Jamie Rees, who sadly passed away in January 2022. The charity now supports the installation and fundraising for defibrillators in Rugby, the Warwickshire area and throughout the UK.

As a small charity rapidly growing, its mission to help others deeply resonated with me. Three of my family members have recently experienced heart problems, so I felt compelled to support this charity.

Ways to help can vary, and while donations are welcome, volunteers are also essential and needed to support. One area of assistance particularly required is guardians to look after defibrillators. These guardians ensure defibrillator cabinets are maintained and operational, ready to save lives.

I’ve begun discussing taking on a number of the units which I will monitor to ensure they’re secure, clean and batteries and pads are ready for use. Naomi (Jamie’s mum) gave me some training on what to check and I took on my guardianship for my first defib unit in the last week. A unit that is close to me allow quick and easy access when required.

My responsibilities will involve regular checks and I’ll occasionally write about this journey to keep you updated on OurJay Foundation’s activities.

If you’re interested in helping, please visit their website and get in touch with them directly. As a guardian of a cabinet, you’ll be assigned to “The Circuit” – a national network and database that tracks defibrillators available to ambulances the public. This allows you to verify battery and pad checks and receive a list of upcoming actions/reminders.

OurJay Foundation aims to raise awareness of the importance of having 24/7 publicly accessible automated external defibrillators. We also aim to raise funds to purchase and install accessible defibrillators across Rugby, Warwickshire and further afield.
