My daughter, who is a Sydney Sweeney fan, wanted to see this film. My wife, having read the book, was intrigued also see the story brought to life so we booked as a family. While many trailers give away half the plot this one cleverly teases a story where you can’t be sure what’s happening or who’s at fault. It’s a good teaser and a great incentive to watch the film. Certainly a film that has a massive promotion budget and the theatre attracted a healthy audience to this preview showing. The film opening officially on Boxing Day.

Sydney Sweeney stars as Millie, a housemaid for Nina Winchester (Amanda Seyfried) and her husband Andrew (Brandon Sklenar). The pace is quick at first as we explore the lives and backstories of the two main female characters. As the story develops, more detail and character development emerge alongside various revelations. It’s clear early on that Nina is struggling with mental health issues while Millie is trying to secure a job after a tough time without work and sleeping in her car. More revelations follow as the story progresses.

Overall, the film is enjoyable and well-paced, though I understand there are differences from the book. A crucial story reveal two-thirds through is perhaps a bit drawn out and slows the pace but thankfully it’s followed by some twists and turns and the story picks up again quickly. I also know the book provides more backstory for Andrew which is missed in the film.

My wife raved about the film, thoroughly enjoying it and I also thought it was good. The ending was particularly good and sets up a possible continuation. I certainly understand more books were written about Millie.

While a drama/thriller, it’s not without some humour and did have the audience laughing at times. A couple of later scenes also made everyone squirm a bit at the thought of something. You’ll know when you see it.

The three main characters are all excellent and Andrew’s role develops more as the story progresses. It’s definitely a worthwhile film to watch over Christmas for a night out. I highly recommend it.
