Unlike many, I really do not consume much alcohol as I love soft drinks. As a family, we do get through a lot of Pepsi, but could we tell the difference for fun? I set about creating our own Pepsi challenge.

My wife and I should be able to nail this as we drink a lot of Pepsi.

The great thing about Pepsi Max is that it is just a diet drink. The same also being true for Coke Zero. Two drinks that taste rather good but with reduced calories that we will compare for this challenge. What is odd though is that some of the older diet drinks, like Diet Coke, really are not nice in my opinion. I bet they would never be released nowadays as a new product, hence the newer max and Zero drinks.

As well as testing if my wife could tell the difference, my daughter also joined in. While she doesn’t drink many soft drinks, her challenge was to decide which was the nicest to drink in her opinion.

The interesting thing was that my wife identified Pepsi Max purely by the fizz. Immediately, she was able to point out that Pepsi was the fizziest and pointed to the correct glass. It goes without saying that she also identified and tested correctly after tasting. Pepsi really was much more fizzy and a very noticeable difference – tart comparing.

More interestingly, what would my daughter make of the two drinks? While not a fan of soft drinks, she also enjoyed Pepsi more.

Personally, I do prefer Pepsi Max and I have drunk it for years since it launched in the mid-90s. To be fair, though, Coke Zero is pretty good as well, with both having their own distinct flavour.

Have you ever tried the Pepsi Challenge? Which is your favourite?

“What did you think? We thought it was a decent enough start overall. The opening political sketch felt like the wrong choice and may have turned some viewers off early, but the titles were strong and Tina Fey was a smart pick to launch the show. We wanted to give it a try and didn’t expect to enjoy it, but it wasn’t too bad. There were some genuinely good sketches and live moments, although the Paddington idea felt like a missed opportunity. It’s clear the show needs to feel British, but in this first series it should still lean into…
