German Christmas markets are all the rage these days. But are such Crimbo markets worth visiting?
Maybe… it just depends.
If you love a good Christmas themed outing with log cabins selling beers, German goods, cookies, gifts and more, this may be your thing. Certainly if you are young and with a group of mates and endless money, you should have a good time. Many young You Tube videos promote such markets and how fun they are.
I have to say that I was really looking forward to visiting this market and while I knew it would be busy, I wasn’t expecting it to be as hectic as it actually was. It was just too extreme which took away some of the fun. We visited on a Saturday afternoon into the early evening. Admittedly we were there at peak time visiting on the Saturday 30-Nov. Maybe earlier in the day or a little later is the best time to avoid peak. Do comment below.
During our visit, you could barely move and long queues were everywhere with most patiently waiting. That was certainly a bonus that while we were there, everyone was polite and that does make a difference. Queue, wait and expensive…
Maybe I am being a grinch but the popularity of the event did stop me getting into the festive spirit. Everywhere was the same that included the train. I did feel for those with wheelchairs, or young children and pushchairs. It must have been a total nightmare for some.
Certainly the market looks festive but like everything these days, the area was more busy that was realistic/comfortable. Even the shops in the Bull Ring had queues to get into which included the new Jelly Cat department in Selfridges, Sephora and even to get on escalators which I have never seen before. And yes, it is Birmingham in the run up to Christmas but almost too popular for its own good. Though I do appreciate that the queues are for safety etc.
I guess I am at an age whereby I appreciate a Christmas market but would like a little space as well to enjoy it. Lol.
The decorations around the area cannot be knocked though and you can’t criticise that part of the experience.
