Sky cinema in the UK is currently advertising the latest film featuring Melissa McCarthy called “Genie”. A Christmas film written by Richard Curtis, which also stars British actor Paapa Essiedu. A remake of an earlier Richard Curtis British tv film from the 90’s called “Bernard and the Genie”. Alan Cumming also features.
Marketed as a Sky cinema original in the UK and available to download in ultra HD. Also available on Peacock in the US. Available now to watch.
Reviews have been mixed and its Rotten Tomatoes score is just 33% currently. However, that does not mean you should write it off. A typical Christmas comedy romp that you can relax and watch. Not laugh out loud but if you like Melissa McCarthy, you will enjoy watching her playing a genie called Flora granting wishes. Some nice entertaining moments and Melissa is always great to watch.
Pappa Essiedu is the male lead and is watchable as Bernard and keeps the story moving. The setting being festive, with Bernard down on his luck and his genie Flora guiding him to put his life back on track.
A happy ending with both main characters in better places by the end as you would expect. Recommended for a gentle film not requiring huge amounts of attention to follow. Age rating PG. kids should really enjoy.
Bring on the Christmas films!
