Livingwriter is a cloud based app for writers. Online software that can be used to create manuscripts, for those keen to write fiction. Not to say that it cannot be used for non fiction titles either.
After writing blog posts for nearly 4 years, I had always wanted to write a book. I had a couple of ideas and have now decided on the what I wish to write about. However, it is quite a jump from writing blog posts to a 300 page book. I felt that I needed guidance and started looking at available software, reading reviews from others. A lot of advice is available online.
Some of the highly thought of competitors allow outright purchase of a license. The downside of Livingwriter is that it is monthly or annual subscription payments. However, many reviews were complimentary about how good this software is.
While you could of course use a standard word processor software, I decided to use something more tailored for writing books. Wanting software that could help with manuscripts and tools specific for authors. I need a bit of handholding at this stage so the software should be ideal.
Livingwriter also offers a 14 day trial. After 2 days I knew that I would stick with it and use it daily. I find it therapeutic to write and I have been using it daily, gradually chipping away at the story I am telling.
On first use, I selected the most appropriate manuscript template which allowed selection of fiction, non fiction, screenplay and custom. Once set, the system gives some initial guidance which is quite intuitive. The manuscript selection was most helpful is planning my journey, the approach that I would use to document the story and write chapters.
While writing, I like to play with the software menus and find my way around. It should be said that at this moment in time, the software is cloud based requiring online working. Knowing I was going to a coffee shop, I did look at offline modes. Though not currently available, I found a page that highlighted their roadmap. I could see the functionality is coming early next year and I was also able to view other new features to be launched along with completed upgrades. In the coffee shop, the online connection with my Mac via my mobile worked well and the auto save function worked without issue.
As well as the browser based version of the software, apps exist for phones and Macs/pc’s.
User interface wise, the top menu had most of the standard format options that you would expect to see in such software. Then for the main view, you can customised with side left and right menus as you wish. The left menu showing the manuscript/chapters with supporting guidance on the right was most helpful.
As well as functions that would be classed as standard word processing functions, you have export capabilities for pdf and even Amazon Manuscript. You can even export and share the book or specific elements with others to help with reviews. Import functionality of chapters also exists.
Lastly, a version history exists to save versions of your work and the app integrates with other software such as Canva for book cover design etc. I have not tried that functionality yet but will do so as a user of Canva.
Overall, I am currently impressed with the software which will also allow me to set goals to make sure I stay on track creatively. The app also providing stats that I can monitor my progress.
A stable piece of software that has made it enjoyable to write.
