I usually avoid romantic movies, especially these days. As a bloke, I’ve learned to put up with them when I was younger and dating. However, the trailer for this romance film hinted at a family-related storyline with more complex past relationships, which might make it more interesting. My wife was keen on seeing it, and as a Cineworld Unlimited cardholder, I thought I’d give it a go and use my membership.

I genuinely enjoyed the story, which follows 16-year-old Clara as she navigates her first love and grapples with her father’s death. The narrative also delves into secret aspects of her father’s life after his passing and explores her mother’s challenges in adapting to new realities and romantic opportunities. The mother’s storyline serves as the main thread that weaves everything together.
The mother’s story delves into her teenage years, and the actress convincingly portrays the same character as a teenager and an adult. This is achieved by very convincing technology to make her appear younger.
The actors were well cast in their roles, and the film was well-paced. The soundtrack was minimal, but the cinematography was excellent. Clara and her mum, Morgan, were touchingly played by McKenna Grace and Alison Williams. Their respective boyfriends, Miller and Jonah, were played by Mason Thames and Dave Franco. Their relationships then explored throughout the film.

Unlike other films that may focus on whether a romantic relationship will survive and flourish, this film doesn’t raise that issue. Instead, it focuses on the cast dealing with the stresses of the family deaths. The film ending at the point where everyone is accepting of their new realities.
Overall, it was an enjoyable film that was entertaining enough for my wife to plan to watch again with our daughter. While it had more drama than comedy, the serious elements made it an enjoyable watch.
