“Roofman” Film Review/Opinion

With my new Cineworld unlimited membership, I’m keeping a more active eye on film trailers. I should be posting more film reviews now! As I expect a fair bit of regular content in this field, do keep an eye on the new “Film” section I have added to this site.

This trailer caught my eye because it seemed interesting. It has a different premise than the norm, based on a true crime story that is undoubtedly dramatised but also humorous.

Starring Channing Tatum (Jeffrey Manchester) and Kirsten Dunst (Leigh Wainscott), both lead the film well. Channing is particularly strong as the main lead. The opening sequence provides background on the famed roofman who robbed McDonald’s stores. After being jailed and escaping, the film follows his crime story as he goes on the run. The protagonist, once a good and decent person, is driven to achieve financial success to win over family and friendships, rather than simply spending time with loved ones. A romantic story line with Leigh Dunst) partly serves the purpose of highlighting that when showering others with generosity, they more likely would have been satisfied with just his time.

The film was nicely paced at two hours. It wasn’t necessarily laugh-out-loud funny, but it told a story in a fittingly light-hearted manner with some gentle humour and amusing sections. The supporting score was more incidental, while a few choir scenes brought in some welcome musical interludes.

Unfortunately I do not believe that the film is blowing away ticket sales at the box office. A shame as it is a worthy film to view and though it maybe a slow burn, perhaps if the word gets out, sales will strengthen.
