Most pubs and restaurants no longer serve decent burgers. At best, you become accepting of an average offering with minimal filling and choice.

While on holiday in Brixham, we looked for a restaurant to book a table for the last night of our holiday. After looking around the town, we settled on the steak, rib, and burger restaurant called “The Cow Shed”. It looked appealing, and the menu on display outside had quite a wide choice. Could this be the decent burger that I was looking for?

The Cow Shed Menu

We booked a table in advance and on arrival, a couple of tables were already eating. As their food was brought out, we had high hopes that this would be a decent meal as it looked really good. The restaurant is family-run and is in the harbour area of Brixham. It has been serving customers for nine years.

We all ordered burgers with a side of onion rings. The menu is vast, and I had a few possible burger choices. I ordered the “Cock & Bull” (chicken and burger), with my daughter ordering the “Massive Cock” (the MC with loads of chicken) and my wife the “Pig Mac,” which was a burger with apple sauce. Specials were also on offer, and the menu also features ribs and steak. Also of note are larger portions called “trays” with combos of ribs, wings, and burgers/chips. The trays that I could see being served were pretty massive, and had a chicken breast option been available, I would have probably gone for it as I tend to avoid meat on the bone.

Drinks were reasonable, and while we ordered soft drinks, there is a bar with loads of choice, including various craft lagers that change. The service was excellent, with lovely staff and a fast turnaround of food orders. They definitely want to please and make sure you have an enjoyable meal. They are also very good humoured as well as welcoming. They obviously appreciate the importance to be attentive and provide an excellent experience.

While eating, several more parties arrived, and as it was a Friday night, it was good to see that the restaurant was a popular location and doing well.

My burger was stacked and was a complete full offering on the plate. Large chip portion, massive burger and a decent serving of homemade coleslaw. The presentation is worth noting as so many burgers look lacking on plates nowadays, and the simple addition of a third item like coleslaw does make a difference.

We all enjoyed our meals and our plates were clean. The side portion of onion rings was massive. The burger patty is also made on the premises and was lovely, fresh and cooked just right. Dessert-wise, we were quite full, but there was a choice of homemade desserts and my daughter opted for some of their ice cream.

I liked the bar and restaurant layout and the cheekiness of the menu. Quite rustic in style, and the décor enhanced with crochet seagulls also on display and available to buy (which can also be bought on Etsy and made by the chef). A nice and slightly quirky setup whereby they are doing their own thing. The venue is also very suitable for families with young children and offers a children’s menu.

Our new soft toy addition

When we come back to Brixham, we would definitely visit this restaurant again. I have to highly recommend it for its decent menu, good service, and excellent food. The portions are generous and food cost is good value. No wonder it was busy, so I would recommend booking to avoid disappointment. Though walk ins are likely also available.

Thank you to all at The Cow Shed for an amazing meal. A big shout out to the chef as well for all the excellent food which lives up to “The Cow Shed” name.

[…] Chip meals were popular with us during the week, and sometimes we would buy sandwiches with a large portion of chips to share. We also ate at The Harvester (read here) which was nearby (Torquay) and also at The Cow Shed restaurant in Brixham which was amazing for burgers, steak and ribs. Read the review here. […]
