After a run of disappointing films both on TV and at the cinema, I was really looking forward to this. A musical biopic about the life of Michael Jackson.
I went in with high expectations and, thoroughly enjoyed it. The film charts Michael’s life from childhood through to the peak of his fame in the Thriller/Bad era. It feels like a faithful account (till the late 80’s), with many members of the Jackson family involved in the production, and places a strong focus on his difficult relationship with his father alongside the warmth and support he received from his mother.

It does feel a touch overlong, but the closing 20 minutes provide a fitting tribute, packed with powerful music sequences and Michael’s original vocals. This is definitely one to experience on the big screen with the volume turned up.
The cast are excellent across the board. Michael is played by his real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, who delivers a sensitive and convincing portrayal of the superstar.
While it’s not strictly a musical, it naturally features plenty of his iconic songs. It’s largely a feel-good film, though it doesn’t shy away from more sensitive moments, including the abuse he suffered and the accident during the Pepsi commercial shoot.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film and would happily watch it again. The teaser for a sequel is intriguing especially with the “The story continues” ending. Considering the substantial footage reportedly filmed I hope this is the case and not just a way of skating over later darker elements of his story. Some critics have criticised this film and claim it’s all a bit sugar-coated and overlooks the later reported events before his death. But given the potential for more and the fact that the film ends during the Bad era, that could explain some omissions if still to come. We will see…
As a fan of his music, and having seen him perform live with my sister many years ago, it brought back some great memories. If you’re a fan, enjoy his music, or are simply curious to learn more about this global icon, it’s worth seeing at the cinema.
Michael is a biographical drama that traces the rise of Michael Jackson from his childhood as a standout performer in the Jackson 5 through his emergence as a groundbreaking solo artist, highlighting his extraordinary talent, creative drive, and the pressures of fame shaped by a strict and often abusive upbringing; the film focuses largely on his early career and peak success in the 1970s and 1980s, blending recreations of iconic performances with glimpses of his personal life to portray both the brilliance and complexity behind one of music’s most influential figures.
