The story follows two performers who formed a Neil Diamond tribute band, and found success and love in the 1980s and 1990s. Originally a documentary released in 2008, it’s now been dramatised and stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as Milwaukee musicians Mike and Claire Sardina who perform as “Lightening and Thunder”.

As a Kate Hudson fan, I was drawn to this film which I might not have otherwise watched. I used my Cineworld unlimited pass and booked for my wife and I.

This proved to be an excellent first film choice for 2026. The two leads delivered amazing performances, complemented by excellent music. The story exploring their love and health struggles, intertwined with their passion for music and family.

The soundtrack is incredible and both actors deliver stunning vocals and performances. I will definitely be streaming the soundtrack to revisit the amazing music.

While I was unfamiliar with the story of “Lightning and Thunder”, I was pleasantly surprised by the film’s unexpected mix of joy and sadness as the story unfolds. Despite its over two-hour and ten-minute runtime, it flew by so quickly and was thoroughly enjoyable. The theatre was busy and I sensed the audience had all enjoyed the film.

This is undoubtedly the best film I’ve seen in months and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a truly N emotional ride and my wife and I thoroughly unexpectedly enjoyed it. It’s a must-watch and this is the first film I’ve given the highest score across all categories I rate.

I really didn’t expect the film to be this good, and it proves why you should take risks in your film choices.
