I’m a big fan of the Alien films but I’m a bit less familiar with the Predator franchise. I saw the original film years ago and of course I’ve seen the Alien vs Predator films more recently.
Having less familiarity with the Predator story, I was optimistic after reading positive reviews beforehand and expecting to enjoy it. It’s also marketed as a great introduction to the franchise for newcomers. However, some die-hard fans might not appreciate the shift in direction with the Predator now the protagonist.
The film kicked off strong with impressive visuals and fitting, vocal supporting music. Then it plunged into action sequences introducing us to the Predator “Dek” (Yautja), played by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. He’s outcast by the clan, deemed a runt. His brother is tasked with killing him by clan leader and father, Njohrr. Refusing the mission, Dek witnesses his brother’s death and flees the planet. Initially, he wants to prove himself and vow to hunt the unkillable apex predator, the Kalisk.
After crash-landing on a planet, you witness Dek facing numerous challenges and forming alliances. He eventually returns to seek revenge on his clan leader and father, Njohrr.
The story, writing and production are all excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and it held my attention throughout. I hope it performs well enough to warrant a sequel. Both leads are fantastic. Fanning effectively plays two synthetic roles believably and Schuster-Koloamatangi also puts in a strong performance, which appears supported by much computer generation to bring his character to life.
At its core, the film is an action movie featuring excellent fight sequences with impressive stunts and art direction. A believable world and landscape are all created through strong visuals, instrumentals and sound design.
The film began with a strong action sequence and concluded on a similar high note. While I anticipated it would be decent, I was pleasantly surprised by its quality and undoubtedly director Dan Trachtenberg deserves a lot of credit for this. My hope for an end credit sequence did not materialise as a set up for a follow up teaser would have been a final treat.
This enjoyable sci-fi romp has successfully rebooted the franchise, in my opinion. One of my favourite films of the Autumn so far. And being an Aliens fan, I loved the shared world.
