Being a Sky Q user (for the moment), we finally gained the channel 4 app late last year. It took me a while to notice the app but once I started reviewing, I could see just how much extra content was available. Many more C4 shows to download than already available by Sky Q.

Before I get into the channel 4 app, I need to say that as this is Sky Q, we appear to have a version lacking the live channel streaming. Not sure why but not a big issue on Sky Q as you can of course still watch live via the TV guide.

Other versions of the app do have the live streaming option whether running on my iPhone, Samsung TV or Apple TV.

In the near future, I will likely be using the Apple TV version as I plan to ditch Sky Q. The Apple TV definitely runs the channel 4 app to a higher standard with full features and higher quality streaming.

I’ve always enjoyed channel 4 programmes and using the app has now made me realise quite how much of their programming that I watch. Recent programmes enjoyed includes The Great, a couple of different Jimmy Carr shows, Lego Masters, The Last Leg, Googlebox and pop Master. The library is massive with loads of boxes and films.

Picture quality wise, you are talking HD. The app appears to have some occasional pixelation on Sky Q but all other app versions seem fine. When testing, TV show “First Dates” was pixelated and then viewing the same show on Apple TV – it was perfect.

The app is free if you wish to watch adverts. We opted for the ad free version which is 4+ and went for the annual sub which was £39.99. As we watch a lot of channel 4 content it made sense therefore to opt for ad free. You also get some programmes in advance of the standard free app version, so my wife had “First Dates” to watch prior to broadcast which is a bonus for subscribers. You can also pay monthly if you wish rather than annually.

Overall, I am pleased with the app and the 4+ that we pay for saves us a lot of time not watching ads. Hopefully in the future the app may also support 4K. Channel 4 has huge aspirations to become a streaming only service and recent viewer figures appear to indicate they are doing well. Looking forward right now to see new content and features.

Please comment below on your thoughts using the app.

  • Easter Eggs

“ As Easter approaches, I’m hoping to stay strong and avoid chocolate. My goal is to eat just one egg. Can I manage that? “

“The second season is nearly done, and somehow I’ve only just discovered this show. I’m about to start the series one finale and honestly, what a great watch it’s been. It feels like 24 meets Lost, with plenty of twists and surprises along the way. I’m hoping it just keeps getting better.“
